Toronto on Fire

A dramatic propane outlet explosion in Toronto, Ontario. The incident happened Sunday morning.

Now I am Just Mad

Set up my whole day to finally relax after six days of work, only to have my day suddenly shifted to boredom. So I`m going to say one last fucking time that Kap Bambino is the best French Thrash duo there is. Missed them when they came to Toronto, Montreal et al. But watch this compiled segment, replacing that ridiculous POS I posted yesterday. My bad.

Running the Walls

No doubt that the 2008 Olympic Games in China had the largest, most perfected, and most cut-to-the-chase opening ceremonies - even beating my previous vote for Sydney 2000. Drums are impressive, especially 2008 syncronized, ancient Chinese drums. I still like fireworks, and the helicopter needed to see them all, and.. Van Koeverden's strength in carrying the flag.. that dude has stamina.

And I managed to chop the Mary Ann Hobbs set to just Birdy Nam Nam's appearance.

Cheerleaders Gon' Wild!

By Associated Press
3:32 PM CDT, August 6, 2008

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _
How many cheerleaders can cram into an elevator? Apparently not 26. A group of teenage girls attending a cheerleading camp on the University of Texas got stuck and had to be rescued after trying to squeeze into an elevator at a residence hall Tuesday night.

One girl fainted and was treated at a hospital and released. Two others were treated at the scene.

The elevator doors refused to open after the pack of 14- to 17-year-olds descended from the fourth to the first floor, police said. Responding to a few panicked cell phone calls from the group, police and firefighters summoned an elevator repairman, who spent about 25 minutes extricating them.

Campus officials weren't amused.

"It's dangerous, actually," said a school police spokeswoman, Rhonda Weldon. "They're lucky that that's all that happened."

Yeah, they could have got the wicked idea to do Debbie Does Dallas. Good thing these girls had some smarts.

DJ Aleksadra Opening for Steve Porter

Back again with another substantial mix! Live from her opening performance for Steve Porter. That's right! Our girl Alexsadra is moving in on the global sound.

Taken from her Eye Weekly Feature on her unique sound,
“It depends on the venue, city and time slot,” says Aleksandra. “My range includes deep house, fun, vocal house, electro and tech house. I am best known for my dirty electro house style, but am expanding more into tech house. “

Enjoy this breezy, deeply soulful Tech House mix; the sound expanding from her earlier bigroom and electro house sounds. Bigroom never died, it just progressed into something fantastic.

Essentially..

my head is still rattled by the thumping bass, the non-stop, no-where-bound conversations, and intense sun exposure with rainy, cold nights. But it was one good festival. Move the rock stage closer, or maybe next year I will bring a bike. However, I did hit up the Jungle tent for a few hours each day and gave it my all. Learning to stall and front kick, and all that good steppin' maneouver.

Until the footaage is transfered we won't know what is on the tapes. The camera was put away for a good portion during the rain, and I spent Sunday night in the tent recovering from the day time's sunshine. However, the drive up was beautiful, the smell of onions not - the stages were immaculate like anyDestiny festival, and I expect CEMF to grow bigger by next year.

In any case it is a good, hard festival. Lots to improve on, including water booths throughout the site, more firewood, and less of a walk to the stages. Even camping next to the gates both years this is the number one problem - distance. Be sure to pack everything you need when heading to the stages. While vendor prices are good and the layout is perfect, the intense sun is easy to burn one's body quick. So plan on being out with the essentials: sunscreen, shades, hats, blankets, and cash.

Thus, yes I will be returning. Number one party and lots of great people. But finally investing in a portable stage tent or party trailer is the call. USS rocked the airwaves and it is sad to have missed them. Benny Page was immaculate. That whole Jungle tent had me moving. I hope they appreciate the torn up grassroots, new growth.

Taken away from the experience: Canadian independant music is performing on a world class stage. Now to invite some Aussies, Brits, Swedish and French producers. Just my take,

Can't say Peace just yet, we will return to the review,

FMF - The Industrial Spies - NEW SET

We were in a dire need of some rocking bass music today. Rock and other music avenues hold their own right, but nothing pumps like electro. The Industrial Spies will be appearing at FUEL and plan to bring their new sound down to town.

What's with batty excitement and lazical rhyming?

Surely non-stop rocking, a drop from labelmate, and London, Ontario producer Klonez layed with Soulwax, Simian, Twoker, Moby+ a packed and ready set for any party. Let's just hope it doesn't rain at the beach this weekend!

FMF - CUTTING EDGE EDITION

Going away this weekened, and after the troubling incident at work yesterday - I need it. We're brining the video camera and are going to be recording footage and interview, when possible. Expect any coverage to be shown by late next week once I learn how to download 8mil to laptop.

Noise my ears will fancy:

UBIQUITOUS SYNERGY SEEKER - Hollowpoint Sniper Hyperbole

^Fucking fantastic to say the least! Toronto's own! I need to catch this performance/experience.

Marcus Visionary's Junglist Movement Tent - Must say the dance tent in 07 was my all time favourite venue at a festival. Spent all my days rinsing out under the shade to sunny beats. This year the direction is singular - JUNGLE. Boh broski!

Benny Page - Battlefield

Machete Avenue - Cut to Pieces

^ Apparently Chad Michael Stewart is a sex machine. Must connect.

And some fantastic underground hip hop, the original name that popped out to me to attend this fest. Hidden love for sure, but true hip hop is full.

Festival Biz

Cutting Edge Music Festival is this weekend. Me and my $120 ticket, a buddy of mine, no tent, stereo with batteries, what we manage to sneak into a cooler from our rents pantry, and my Mexican blanket plan to have a grand time. Grand showing last year; spread out with big, wide stages, awesome rigging, and a friendly atmosphere considering there were a few thousand drunks; the stuff that makes this trash-summer worth the work!

My good buddy and neighboor Jacob took this series. I am in the orange polo, bottom left.

Fueled by Glastonbury Festival, I am demanding you all stream or download this set. Please? It will brighten up your day, you can sing along - cereal, it is epically catchy - and prepare to laze through Thursday, coast through Friday for a four-day holiday weekend!

Huge fan of Pole Vault here, no lie. Yelena Isinbayeva is the greatest woman vaulter ever! Smashing record after record, Adidas commercial, and a new World Record of 5.04m! Random Shandom

Being a jackass I tend to forget things in posts. So.. take this fantastic live recording of The Wombats at Glastonbury. Something about 100,000 singing fans just excites me.

Like this:

The Verve

Been 11 years since these fellows last released an album. In 2008, they are set to drop Fourth on August 4th. The new album's first single, Love is Noise has been pre-released in video form and is currently inching its way up my top list.

Synchronicity in epic proportions, visualising love is not something taken lightly. The director of this video took this great song and has made it grand. My favourite element is the sound-activated 'fire tube,' which I will go out on a limb and say Maker's Faire? Further research claims it is a Ruben's Tube.

Enjoy.

Justice at Last!

Justice is without a doubt one of the top DJ/Producer dance combos out there today. Everything good about dance music, the enrgy, the fresh technological sounds - Justice has. One of his latest-and-greatest Stress, mashed with some impossibly bad French acting. Well, not bad persay, but very ridiculous. I hope all of France isn't stuck in the early 90's fashion. Fight scene is pretty awesome tho, wait for the random Japanese cameo. Click his name link to listen to the non-mashed up version on his MySpace.

Olympic Hopefulls

China's carbon-construction-transportation ban was fully imposed today. All construction must stop in parts of Beijing. While it remains to be seen how clean the air will be throughout the 2008 Olympic Games, we can hope the man-made attempts to control weather, and the fallout of positionable proportion, don't dope the athletes at this year's Games.

But G'oh Canada!
I even dyed my hair red.

PS.

After my lazily Sunday laze my house was awoken to the barks of our dogs alarmed by the shadow in the doorway. On answering the door my eyes were filled with a field of sunflowers. The French-spoken shadow revealed himself as my gaze drifted upwards. He cried his sales-call in a French accent and had his hair licked back in soften curl. Holding back a few dogs with chaotic effort, I replied my unintelligible, but visibly-shaken rejection and closed the door.

Sunflowers? Posters? Dude, we're in a recession and all the major Discount retailers have that shit for like $5.99+tax.

Although I enjoy seasoned sunflower seeds, Spitz brand to be sure, I can't help but thinking if he was really French or leery compu-nerd with a good dose of Proactive.

The Chemical Brothers

Big news again from The Chemical Brothers, appears their fifth album will be releasing September 1st of the present year. A journey that has lasted 13 years, an institution of sound is awaiting release.

Chemical Beats were born the 90's, most anthem tracks can still be heard playing from the zombie decks, but there are numerous distinguishings between why the Chemical Brothers stood around, and how they kept building their sound to fill the connection between fans and fancy.

Big Beat is a term to losely collaborate the like of FatBoy Slim, Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, Groove Armada, and many other contributing artists in a big-beat, jazzy fusion of synthesized bass and tonical elements. It was a true joint-collective of British and American sounds of the 90's as it encapsulated the land, sea and airwaves of Britain and North America.

At the peak of the Rave sensation in North America, thousands were attending illegal and legal night parties, and jamming to these tunes. Block Rockin' Beats, Out of Control, HBHG, Saturate, plus including plenty of recent material, Brotherhood is a chart-enmasser. Trust, the set list looks pretty stacked:

TRACKLISTING

DISC 1
01. Galvanize
02. Hey Boy Hey Girl
03. Block Rockin' Beats
04. Do It Again
05. Believe
06. Star Guitar

09. Keep My Composure
10. Saturate
11. Out Of Control
12. Midnight Madness
13. The Golden Path
14. Setting Sun
15. Chemical Beats

DISC 2

PLUS

1-10 Electronic Battle Weapons

Old antics or new Hi-jinks, I still wholey believe 90's Big Beat can capture its audience. Bassy beats, rocking anthems and one hell of a good vibe. Mentioning their new sound/exploration, their coming album will surely be a treat.

Be sure to check out the previews.

Fratellis Talk New Single

FMF - The Gossip

The Gossip are by far my favourite band of recent listenings. Incredible, energy fuelled performance, bold voice, catchy riffs. Based in Portland, Oregon, the trio grew up in Arkansas and exist to inspire. Perhaps that's the reason for their in-your-face attitude, I certainly can relate.

Small, suburban townships offer fewer channels of thought distribution than larger cities and urban centres. Youth are inclined to set their minds on anything that keeps them occupied; music, cellular phones, celebrities.. junk.

Artists, rebels, and renegades that come from small villages have lots to say, confusion for how to say it, and few to listen. Ideas collect and explosions of fantastic thought make for real, frontline art, performance, display, etc.

You can surely get that from listening to the song, and the lyrics are straight up.

Born in Italy but a lifelong Alberta resident, Grandi announced his retirement in early 2007. He reached the World Cup podium nine times — five times in slalom and four in giant slalom.

“My return to ski racing as Canada hosts the 2010 Winter Olympics is an opportunity that can never come again, especially with my wife seeking to compete in cross-country," said Grandi. "I’m confident Alberta Alpine is in a very strong position and is well positioned to have continued success in the coming years.”

Michael Stipe - Installation at the Rogan Boutique

REM front man Michael Stipe recently completed an encompassing installation of cardboard alarm-clocks in a shop's window. The first leaked photograph of the installation, before the unveiling, were taken on June 26th.

The alarm clocks spill from the interior of the Rogan Boutique on Bowery, in New York City, onto the street. Connecting the new shop to its neighborhood in a time-laden display.

Stipe also released a series bronze-cast cassette tapes,
Housed in the former Bowery Lane Theater, a historic cast iron building on the Bowery in lower Manhattan, the store's dramatic interior, intensified by a sweltering late-June heat, provided the backdrop for R.E.M. front man Michael Stipe's latest turn as a sculptor in "Relics," an exhibition of his bronze castings, which opens to the public June 27 for one month.
