Daft and Disney

The robot-punks of France are set to record the music and soundtrack to Disney's Tron 2.0, a remake of the 80's original. A film about robots with a score by two of the most famous robot-people of all!

Not only will it be their first album recording since Human After All, but it's for a Disney feature film. One has to suspect that the duo's love of art films and technology has something to do with them jumping on board. Congrats! I don't watch much movies, especially Sci-Fi - but I could like this.

Excision - Shambhala (2008)

Shambhala Music Festival is the essential dance festival of Western Canada and North Western United States. In the dense forests of the Kootenay's, along the Salmo River in Canada's province of British Columbia, lay several hand-built stages and paths, a mountain-fed river beach, and quite possibly some of the most unique festival villages in the world. I'm trying to track down a quality video of the event, but them hippies can't use technology properly!
If you enjoy Dubstep with a bit of DnB and some really organic experimentation of basslines than check out this mix recorded in the Ewok Village in 08.

Sauve Assassins

Stumbled upon the crew of Suave Assassins and subscribed to their podcast - which expands to over 50 episodes! DnB from Canada's West coast. Nothing gets me going like a collective of top-tune purveyors. The amount of talented DJs and producers west of the Great Lakes is phenomenal!

Outside of Canada's capital of commercialism (Toronto,) there's an organic rhythm to the sounds of the Underground. Aside from the weeklies in Toronto that pack the house, here out West it is a much more dedicated, hard-working group of fanatics. Expect a lot more Western Canadian beats from us!!

Cute rendition of the Fresh Prince theme by Kay Pettigrey - a Grade 7 student in Toronto. Pleasant vocals that made my Saturday, in mellow tone that I've grown to love recently.



Enjoy! The dance tunes will come in time, there has not been anything exceptional to come my way in a bit- though I haven't searched hard since I've been working harder. 12 hour days in the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains, riding public transit, and drinking tea from water bottles.

Hydroplaning Dolphins

The BBC always has interesting documentaries. Perhaps its the narration or the pan-flute still in use from the Middle Ages that makes the videos so appealing, but in any case these dolphins are evolution in perspective.

- Born on old school computers in Angola, Kuduro genre is low-tech, high-energy lower West African dance music driven on free samples, cracked software, and percussive patterning. -

Buraka Som Sistema are a collective of old-world and new-world technologies and cross-border recording and vocal artists. Mainly based in Lisbon, Portugal, the flavour of Kuduro meets HiFi equipment and many Angolan migrants in the suburbs and the city itself. Add in production skills from M.I.A. and king of Kuduro DJ Znobia, plus Angolan MCs, - and this cross-border sound cult is the only true international group fit for the title.

Black Diamond is the full debut album from Buraka Som Sistema which they're touring currently.

Both links follow to the original posts and come with tracklistings. Even as a pale Canadian the warm bass and upbeat rythems get played quite often. I probably watched that documentary 20 or 30 times while writing this post, and would have put more effort into it had I not gotten sick. But in any way, watch Buraka Som Sistema and other international collaborative groups. They're bringing music from shadowed cultures and forefronting it to wide audiences with some of the best vocalists (Sabarosa's annunciation is wild!) and production men and women without the need of borders, aside from cultural differences. But spice up the cold months and get ready to shake! BSS is truly an international act.

Kalemba/Wegue, Wegue - great live performance turned music video for their 2nd single which is #2 on the Portuguese charts at the time of writing.

2009

Starts in Calgary. The move went well besides a hangover and turbulence and first time flying, on a seven AM flight. But that quickly passed and set into jet-lag. All is well now and I am heavily enjoying myself in the city. Here are some pictures from my webcam in my room and balcony.

Having a Little Fun Today

Manuel Osbourne-Paradis placed Third at Val Gardena, Italy today in FIS World Cup ski racing. The videos aren't up yet, but here is is 3rd place finish on the treacherous Lauberhown course in Wengen, Switzerland at the end of last season. The announcers are awesome.

DJ Zinc Grows Farther

Under my limited intake of Jungle and Drum and Bass DJ Zinc is one artist that tops my list. Classic take on complex rythems and dedicated showcasing of the music. He's been around a while and eventhough he reigned, and might still reign, the top of the DnB DJs, his new twist in influence comes not from a funky broken-beat. But rather the 4/4 line of House music.

I'm not complaining. My tastes towards DnB have diminished over time (unless the DJ is extremely intricate and talented in his mixing and track selection.) So Zinc plays House. Or Funky, or UK Funky. Great! Keep reaching new audiences and growing with the music.

What is Funky?

It feels to me a bit like UK garage, except it’s a bit more 4/4. The UK take on house often is grittier. I guess it’s because British people have been listening to lots of reggae and jungle, so they bring those elements.

Read the Red Bull Music Academy Interview with Zinc for his view on his growth as a musician. Which it truly is: growth. Instead of staying in a stagnant situation, he furthered his approach and updated witht he music. Impressive, intriguing, and instyle.

WWWD is the opening of the Glasto set by Hot Chip. Albums are great, but weave those tunes together and that is something performers and artists do. This was truly the break up of popularized techniques in marketing (MTV, YouTube) in 2008. The festival season showed these breakthrough artists in light, where the television painted them as you gotta be real cool to like this music.

Truth to say - the people who like the music do not deviate. We create.

Art can't exist without followers. But followers should know they are not apable of the full understanding of the artist. This want to know more is called intrigue. Not a trend.

Dublin, Ireland's Fight Like Apes opened for The Ting Tings and eventually caught the ears of The Prodigy. FLA will be opening for The Prodigy on their upcoming UK tour.
