An humorous look through time and the Ascent of Man.

The imagery Canadian artist Bruce McCall uses is reflective of the tomorrow that never happened in post-war Western society. His work is funny, intelligent, and focuses on illustrative realism of technologies conceived, but never born.

The Chemical Brothers - Midnight Madness

I posted this about a year ago, but it is still so prime. Anyone who hasn't bought or listened to Brotherhood by the Chemical Brothers and thinks they know Electronica is dearly mistaken.

Read our post from last year. It includes titles of the tracks released on their culmination album, plus a lot of hidden material - where else can you get the best before-released tracks - the ones they made on their equipment. Right, many of you forgot Electronica started on digital instruments and not a drop-in sound-sample program.
This is why the Chemical Brothers have outlasted, and will outlast, most of today's 'hits.'

BLACK SUN EMPIRE - Podcast 007 - Featuring Mindscape and Jade - James Bond DarkSide DNB

In recent years and releases many DNB tracks have become too heavy on the snare. The bassline, the bump, the DarkSide went missing. Artists like Spor, Apex, Ewun, Misanthrop, Black Sun Empire, (as far as I've listened - remember, I'm not a huge DNB head, I only like intricate and fantastic) - HELL - I am not a name-dropper! but these artists have brought back the rythm of the drum and BASS.

These sets I find that are immaculate transitions of melody and bass counts are huge on my listen count. Heavy on whomp, timely on the snare. It's rolling, its slamming, it's techy, deliberate and the production quality is there.

It's been a while since a big set like this has been posted on RRR but I doubt many, or any, have downloaded this mix. Mastered by Mindscape and Jade.

DJ Mark M - Junglizm Funky, Chunky Party Mix!

Well that was July! It was fast, hardly warm, and everyone was at festivals. Honestly.. I haven't heard anything worth posting in a month.

But WAIT!

This set got sent to me and it is absolutely RIDICULOUSLY loaded with tunes.
As a DJ, Mark M, aka Mark the Mechanic, has played Canada's C!RCA Night Club, thrown successful parties, challenged the DMC turntablists and should have won, and overall is a great hands-on man in the local and provincial scene. London, Ontario is not a big enough stomping ground for this man of the mix. I had been bagging him for months and I am floored with this release. VERY....

Heavy bass, creative mixing, tasteful tunes that propel emotion, and all with a driving bassline. Give it up for a hardworking Local who covers his ass with this mix. Seriously, absolutely lovely this mix is.

Sleep Alone - Bat For Lashes

No one on my playlists can match Bat For Lashes for vocals. It's proven with her new video Sleep Alone, the third single from Two Suns, her 2nd album. Mystifying entirely.

Money City Maniacs - Sloan

I find Sloan to be one of the iconic bands of Canadian Rock music ever. Sloan are a long-standing (especially in the Canadian music scene) Halifax outfit transplanted to the Toronto metro, with 13 albums including the superb live catalog performance quadruple-vinyl/CD album 4 Nights at the Palais Royale and another rare live show recording called Recorded Live at a Sloan Party. They are performing at the Calgary Drenched Music and Water Ski Festival this Friday, August 6th 3:45-5PM. It's going to be a great Friday afternoon of water, wake and an outdoor festival performance by Sloan.

Speaking about one of the best Canadian bands, this video has to be one of the better pieces of Canadian music video. It was produced going into the height of the 90's. It's red, it's retro. I Like.

Dubcomm - Killbox Alpha free Drum and Bass promo mix from Toronto

What an interesting mix of technical Dark Drum and Bass. Excite your senses with a dream-like soundscape from Toronto's Dubcomm. Tech DnB in a form as solid as this release is rare to find. Better yet, the dabbing of Hardcore from Canada's Capital of Menace (Toronto's Hardcore underground shall always, always live on!) bring a slamming fierceness to Killbox Alpha. A definite must for the Dark Side enthusiast.

Mike Conradi - July Mix

- A strong BIG mix of Breaks and House is the latest by Mike Conradi.

This mix serves punch with electro flair, clean and intelligent mixing, and chunky/funky basslines. Precision transitioning from an electro-funky Breaks blend into tech-electro House heavy on the bassline - and back again to Breaks, puts this mix on the map.

It has been a year at least and Little Boots, along with the top of the year, have played Glastonbury. I am not amazed at the happening, rather more intrigued with the development of grand-central musicians.

Apparently many of us online enjoy our music so much that we can get home-grown talent onto world-class stages.

DeKoze - Toxic 3 Year - 2 Hour set! Toronto's favourite underground House junky pumps the mix!

DOWNLOAD (Click Link to transfer to Download Page)
NO TRACKLIST - 2 Hours of Progressive, Funky, Sensual House

Called the King of the Funky of the Toronto Underground,
and playing hundreds of legitimate and intimate parties, DJ DeKoze deserves his reputation.

From one of the world's largest Pride's - Toronto,
or small and intimate venues across Canada, and international dates, Michael DeKoze has brought supreme dance tunes into the open.

His seduction by selection controls any dance venue, be it floor or street party, Pride or otherwise. DeKoze was a great man to honour up this TWO HOUR pumping mix. The energy lies within the .mp3, as each track is carefully selected to make the crowd groove and move, shake, battle, and make up in a sexy twist of proper beats.

Anyone living in Canada and who is involved in the progression of our Dance and Underground scenes must know DeKoze. For he has held onto music like no other. And his motives are to make the crowd break down their walls and let the bass and music cling to their souls.

A proper and appreciated thanks to those DJs who have allowed us to post their music. And a fine day it will be with an intimate and seductive progressive bass-rolling mix as prime back-sound.

DUTTY BASS RIDDIMS Dr. Woogie - Dutty Charge with MC Chickaboo & Mama Shamone Batty Bass Records

Phase 3 of RRR is rolling out this next week. Expect interviews and un-shared media. We've built a reputation of putting forth our best to give you the best of the electronic scene. Sure we have missed a tonne of release dates, but the ones who stick to our mind are the ones we post. And you're sure to find them and others by searching in the top-left corner.

Batty Bass Records was set to release last year, but after some troubles with distributors and a savvy tour schedule including Asia, Australia and many European festivals, it has taken until the start of this year to put out the glorious tunes on BBR. Hannah Holland, the leader of the pack, backed up by MCs Mama Shamone and Chickaboo (check a few posts below for her spatten words over DnB with the Feline Crew) is working hard to promote her sound and her love of deep-bass, funky and wonky House and Dubstep.

Here's the latest feature from Batty Bass Records:

Throwback.. Mike Conradi - Aug 23, 2008 - originally posted August 22, 2008

WE ARE THROWING BACK nearly a year to the height of Summer 2008.

- Music had been going in a whole new direction. House music regained a soul in many ways and technologies assisted in the mass production of digital creativity that has helped shape samples and elements popular in current House, Techno, Jungle/Drum and Bass, and more so - general contemporary Electronica.

Today, the music is in all the clubs and blasted through commercial channels. Much of it is pop-gimmick BULLSHIT music. But for a few champions and pioneers success has been elemental in growing digital dance music.

The progression Toronto DJ Mike Conradi (Search top-left for a whole slew of mixes) makes with each of his recorded sessions is a prime quality for a DJ, seemingly effortless, and quite unique to have.

And his control of effects and sound levels just intrigues my mind. Let it up people, Conradi is good. Real good.

DnBTV - Feline Crew Takeover all female Drum and Bass crew repping the big tunes

A collective of all female sound-wizards called Feline Crew brought their goods and tunes and MCs to DNBTV. So many great downloads have been posted on RRR, but its the constant change and progression of DNBTV and its guests that makes me post these sets.

As someone who truly enjoys the dimensions electronic music has taken to recover from the depths of Hardstyle and Happy Hardcore (much respect to each on a good night by-the-way..), it is great to hear organic, soul-moving, quality sounds. Plus - the new vibe of collaborating, for me, is a throwback to the community of party-kids and ravers alike. Much respect.

And big-up respect to MC Chickaboo of the Batty Bass crew too, for her abilities behind the bass of 4/4 or the broken-step beats. It is still my intentions to show my support in the crowd at one of Batty Bass' events. Here's hoping!

And now the good sounds. Very different approaches by each female, respectable artists. Big, big tings!

Fresh Out of Death Podcast 005 SOLO charms with Zulu House

A rather charming mix straight from the Fresh Out of Death podcast series. After a long work-week a blend of Zulu/Funk/Jazzy/Samba/Batty/Wonky House should suit well with many of our readers. And yes, it may be early Saturday for places outside the Americas, but that's not my fault!

Solo is the man behind the funky Congoloid, the refreshing climber The Big Stef. His tunes appear on the Dirtybird Records label and have been picked up by Zombie Disco Squad and our lovely Hannah Holland. Purchase these tasteful club tunes from Beatport and Juno.

DJ Hype on KISS FM June 10 2009 free Drum and Bass mix

A staple on KISS FM, DJ Hype's latest show has plenty of bangers and a selection of Drum and Bass Step. Deep dub grooves topped with the tings of DnB. Quite a stylized take on Dub Step and Drum and Bass that isn't to much to handle.

Although, I personally want to move away from the radio shows with lots of talk-over. Do you agree?

Futurama is BACK don't call it a comeback

Good news everyone!!

“ We're thrilled Futurama is coming back. We now have only 25,766 episodes to make before we catch up with Bender and Fry in the year 3000." Added his fellow Futurama creator, David X. Cohen, "We're excited and amazed that the show is coming back, perhaps due to some sort of mysterious time loop. We look forward to working with Comedy Central and 20th Television to make this the best iteration of the loop yet!”

The 5th season will have 26 episodes and has been picked up by Comedy Central.

Thanks IGN.

Mike Conradi - June 7 2009 a free mix of Tech and Electro>

Mike Conradi is once again liberating the soundsystem. Recorded earlier today in one session, this latest selection of his chugs in energy from start to finish. The progression through the tracks is completely satisfying with purposely mastered EQs and symbiotic mixing that is keeping up with his trademark quality of defined sound. Mike evolved his music and skills in the underground arenas and popular nightclubs of Southern Ontario. He is a much welcomed name to the nights we enjoy thoroughly but may or may not remember. Enjoy Mike Conradi's latest mix recorded June 7, 2009.

Calgary - Your Weather Is Aweful

Today I awoke rather late to a mixture of slush pellets and rain. This slush-rain broke way to clear skies and warm sun. A brief moment of the transition season called Spring that many Calgarians cannot seem to recognize and the many migrants seem to have forgotten.

Which broke into the hail that the South of Calgary had been reporting earlier today.
Thanks to Thanks a Soldier.net, a local support-man for Canadian and International troops - we have obtained video of the hail.

What is this Calgary? Does it really snow every month of the year? Or now, these conglomerate precipitations.. slush-rain, snow showers, 4" snowflakes and 75Kmph winds.. but then random, nauseating transitions into 20+ degree weather and clear skies.

To stimulate the construction industry we might consider building a dome over the city. Or an indoor amusement park. So I'm not afraid to leave my house in case I end up dragging home 100lbs of groceries in hail.

DubFX featuring WoodNote Street collaboration w/ beatbox. pattern machine, and a phenom on the sax

If possible, and it is: live music, and ideally our music is meant for the public. In this display of showmanship and lyricism and performance, DubFX and a sax player I'd love to link to, but cannot at this time, Woodnote, perform a talented and tuned supplement to our ears.

Enjoy this street performance by the pair on BIG VIDEO, once again! ;)

Thanks to Amy Mahon our site will now have wider video, pics, and info! Thanks for all the help!! PS: if you'd like a site or element created personally and professionally, this lady is the factory to do it.

The Crystal Method - June 3 - The Whiskey Nightclub, Calgary, Canada REVIEW

Much anticipation between my roommate and myself for this show. Months in advance I clipped the 4x6 black-and-white ad out of the paper and posted it on the refrigerator (which I later traded up for a full poster-flier I clipped from an event-post in my 'hood). So the date and event were set, but the experience had just begun.

Fans of the Acid-Breaks and the Big Beat style of their older material, it was a shocking pleasure to hear the new album Divided by Night. Produced exceptionally, the album features a defining approach to modern Electronica. Experimentation, distortion, but a solid grasp in collecting the perfect songs and elements to make up the album.

Artists and elites including Metric's Emily Haines, American Folk artist Meiko, and Peter Hook of New Order appear on the album. The collaborations are poignant to the expressive mood the album takes. Unlike the previous album Vegas, but similar in the progressive nature of the tunes, the atmosphere created by the soft-tone of many of the tracks was a matured approach from within the duo's skills. And this is what shocked me - how could we dance to down-tempo, soft-vocal productions?

Make the show LIVE.

The Whiskey Nightclub was a perfect performing venue for the American pair. The stage was central in the club and took the band's equipment nicely. Large screens for video and a fantastic light rack brought the audience in. The layout of the club itself was essential to my enjoyment - no queue's at the many bars, room to walk around, but just packed enough to get the full-on effect of a mid-week party. The place was packed, the floor filled, and the speaker cabinets more than capable. In essence - as perfect a set-up as could be had.

Since this is not a review of the album, which is mighty great and continues to evolve an appreciation inside me, I will post the pictures of the night:

The many strobes gave the show rock-star appeal

The crowd was livin' it!

Performing live took talent, which was plenty from the guys.

They THREW DOWN and we loved it!

Huge screens and stunning effects played throughout the show.

Scott Kirkland - who'd I'd eventually meet and shake hands with!

Ken Jordan raising a glass.

And then the video which I tried to get the crowd, the band, and the sound in. Unfortunately, even plugging my microphone with my fingers didn't allow for a good sound-recording. The video is alright though:

The show was fantastic! A great night, better performance, and even better production. Cheers!

DJ Hero vs Guitar Hero huuuuge video for wanna-be DJs and guitarist! The future is here!

Big news for you gamer DJs and friends alike - although it has taken a bit of slack from the 'guru' or 'loser' columns, Activision has stayed true to us and DJ Hero is soon-to-be released! Here's a video to show you the action. Intense! Good news - you're twangin' guitar hero friends can join in!

Batty Bass Radio 15 your favourite bass-Queen Hannah Holland posts another mix

There is no tracklist released for this mix as of yet, but I am sure it hits heavy. Like the many other Batty Bass mixes, expect huge, up-front tunes, wonky basslines, and the ever-evolving sound of Batty Bass - by Her Majesty, Miss Hannah Holland.

Either in the studio, the label-house (Batty Bass Records has released several big-hitters this season,) or in your house, you haven't heard House music quite like this before. Bump-it, shake-it, let the bass hit off the walls.

Kapulet - Vinyl Fantasty bright DnB mix by local promoter, podcaster, and DJ Kapulet

What's with the hiatus? This man had been throwing up some tempting podcasts under the Canadian Drum and Bass Podcast series until, of course, his Mac bit the binary. Kapulet is back and we're ready for him more than ever. After completing the mad-respectable CCDNB's 001-007 the several-month break means the man should have been listening to plenty more of Canada's finest electric drum rhythms.

His personal taste is impeccable. Check out the man's most-current release and expect some updates to follow on these heals.
