From the days of Funky House and Dirty Breaks came an cross-border duo called The Beat Freakers. Full of funk and big skills in performing live, The Beat Freakers testified to the Chicago and Toronto underground during the early-mid 2000's. A dynamic fusion of phat tracks and funky styles left its mark whether playing to massive sold-out indoor venues, or playing from the back of a rental truck to the most willing listeners. Again, The Beat Freakers - a class act that has been on hiatus. Wonder what their new word will be?

It has been a long time since I've heard a Hard House mix of this quality. In the past week I've dug out my CDs and have started putting my older favourites back onto my computer. Where to begin but where it ends? Miss Kittin has been a phenomenal artist and vocalist to the underground scene since the mid-90's. Her iconic sound of synth and strong vocals, sexy and sleek, have rebounded her 15 years later for one to watch in 2009. I first heard her during Media Studies in the college art studios (2003) and have loosely followed her throughout the years, but her sound is iconic. Twilight and perceptive delights. Crisp, sensual vocals. Deep and melodic grooves. Fantasy and finesse.


PS. I'll also mention Chicks on Speed: “Kaltes klares Wasser” is one of my all-time favourite tracks.

No doubt Mars was one of the top-hitters of 2008 with its chunky beat and droning theme. Better than the Kollaboration videos. This is collaboration, however. Two brothers pop and lock and liquid and moon walk as a morphing robot. Intense.

Sprung Leak

The lovely Hannah Holland of Bastard Batty Bass releases a proper set for a proper time. She's reppin' Spring with a tasty new mix of her signature selections. Spring is now upon you (definitely not here..) and rolling in are the sounds of tomorrow's parties! I am probably heading to the mountains next week to ski and it feels good to not feel brittle in -35c with a severe windchill. But coasting through the snow and vista views are in order. I guess that's what this mix is about for me. I'm sure for others it will bump the bass and have you dancing with the windows wide open!

It's also released at a perfect time. RiotRiotRiot was started one year ago to collect all the music that really made something happen inside my ears. We've listened to Holland for over a year and it feels damn good to hear what she's bringing to the US in 2009. She's been having a time traveling and working Europe, Australia, and Asia with her hand-picked blends of House and Techno. If all goes well we might have a few dates around our areas that be worth traveling for! (Hannah, please somewhere along the West coast..)
