Burning Man

People often ask why I haven't set aside the funds or time to do a Burning Man. Besides the constant desert sun radiating through my see-through skin and frying me inside and out, and the weeklong out-of-this-reality experience, I remain on one excuse:

Burning Man is for playas.

Situated inside the Nevada-California border, a yearly construct of individuals, ideas, art, freedom, self and group expression, massive and impressive sculpture, takes place in Black Rock City. A complete on-the-fly do-it-yourself, live-it-yourself creative city in the middle of the desert. It happens this week, annually.

Last year was perhaps the most interesting event in the time of Burning Man. In all its continued and prosperous growth it was eventual that someone would ruin the party. Burning the man early, and devastating the ritualistic glory of the community-burn, was perhaps the biggest blow to the festival's peacefull and mature attitude in all of 21 years (22 with 2008 inclusive).

"Some people were chanting, 'Let him burn, let him burn!' and some were chanting, 'Save the Man, save the Man!' " said Kyle Marx of Eugene, Ore.

In all the inclusive spirit it remained that it is within nature to be divided and together, even in idealistic cultures.

However, as much as it isn't in my body to put forth the commanding effort of a Burning Man, there is something very special that those who do attend come away with. Likend to a big meet-up of indipendant micro-movements, culminating in the burning of a giant wooden structure, Burning Man remains a great impression of individuality and culture.

There are no rules about how one must behave or express oneself at this event (save the rules that serve to protect the health, safety, and experience of the community at large); rather, it is up to each participant to decide how they will contribute and what they will give to this community. The event takes place on an ancient lakebed, known as the playa.
