The Conservation Hour - or Longer

Each week a section of a schedule is taken to conserve and converse a non-wasteful block of time. The Conservation Hour can be applied to teams - work places or social gatherings, or as an individual. Everyone puts more thought into the tasks they perform and the collective reduction is a satisfying result of a good time. A quick idea I have is candles and cocktails for the first hour of a social gathering. Post your comments and suggestions anonymously or with your GMail/Blogger account.

In the individual platform - an hour before bed with the television, computer, stereo and other non-essentials unplugged, perhaps supplemented with yoga or reading.

A friend, Megan, wrote:

I think that some of us don't even realise the energy that we use in even just simple appliances - such as speakers or satellite receivers being left on after the television is flicked off; scented wall outlet plug-ins. One of mine is leaving the baby monitor on when Leona isn't sleeping.
Very well put.

Electro-Magnetic-Frequency ( EMF ) Pollution

  • EMF pollution on humans is as severe as any pollution, in any system.
  • Earth's molten core pulsates - resulting in many geo-phenomena: earthquake, mountain range, volcano, tsunami... Image: the Core of Earth.
  • Disruption of our natural electronic synchronisation is harmful to our health.

Communicating Clearly = a Better You

Being an active listener is an important element to clear communication.
Understanding the message, as it were intended, provides context to respond.
Like all technologies - language is incremental in the learning process.

It is possible to be the communicator and the receiver.

How we complete that process can make us more positive, and have a better understanding of ourselves.

Building Big-Waste Towers

My understanding of skyscrapers is that they provide valuable space in dense urban centers. Other towers, such as Toronto's Canadian National (CN) Tower, act as national communications antennas. However, I can't even begin to comprehend the pompous attitude towards modern-day skyscrapers. There has to be a better symbol than a giant, metal-and-glass encrusted penis.

Noteworthy icons for cities off the top of my head;
New York - Central Park,
London - Big Ben clock-tower,
Sydney - Opera House,
Japan - apple blossoms and pagodas,
Rio De Jeneiro - Christ the Redeemer,
San Francisco - Golden Gate Bridge,
the Port of Hong Kong -

The symbolism of these icons, and others like them, extends far beyond the heights of numbers; passion, history, culture, technology, beauty, religion, nature's marvels -
But what the got-dang is so appealing about a giant tower that symbolises gluttony, greed, competitiveness?

We want to reach up to the heavens, but we won't reach out to secure a more sturdy base amongst others. Even one of those dollars is enough to feed a mouth, pay a day's - even a month's wage to one person. The tens of billions of dollars could sustain safe living standards to an enormous amount of people!

And they want to go a mile high?
They can't even look over their shoulder and see something more deserving.

Feed Some Kids

FreeRice.com is an easy favourite of mine. It is a testing challenge of vocabulary and semantics for 20 grains of rice for each correct answer. Elevating levels make it a great personal competition. My highest vocabulary level thus far is 32. In the short time I spent on the site I managed to donate 10100 grains of rice. That is a few bowls of rice for some deserving mouths.

The Eye in the Sky

Cartography and maps have always tickled my mind. Digital satellite-imaging program Google Earth and I spend hours scoping out American civic-systems. Since much of the USA is in High-Def, travelling their interstates and city streets is far more interesting than peering upon Canadian blob-towns.

Last month I ventured back up to Canada and noticed Woodstock, Ontario - a city 45km East of me - had gone HD. I am assuming it is because of the new Toyota plant. Of course I followed the 401 back westward and my heart sank a little..

The Fuzz-Line is down the right side of my yard. Thanks Google Earth! Let me know when you scan my area again - I'll be sure to lift a finger to the sky and smile!

Spring Skiing and R&R

Blue Mountain - Collingwood

Easter 2008

The view from our window.

And entry.

Night Skiing is my forté.

Views of Georgian Bay warrented a mid-slope stop.

My little SW Ontario legs needed the break aswell.

After a great slope-session we went out for a bit of Late-Night Apres.

The picture was taken with my eyes - FYI.

And the final day snow-squalls. Complete white-out conditions.
