State of House Laurent Garnier's good words against hipster House

On the campaign trail for his brand new album, Tales Of A Kleptomaniac, respected French techno producer, DJ and label kingpin Laurent Garnier has spoken about his dislike for the brash and boisterous style of his countrymen at bleeding edge label Ed Banger.

In an interview with Resident Advisor Garnier was in no mood to bite his tongue, clearly unimpressed with the over-the-top attitude of Busy P and his posse. “There’s one thing that really has changed in the music scene and that’s the way we exist,” said Garnier, when asked for his thoughts on the current scene. “15 years ago, we fought for our music. We didn’t care about having our pictures taken, or being in magazines. Some people did, but it was not the done thing – it was all about being faceless, letting the music do the talking. That was one of the great things about techno music. Now it’s all about what I look like, who I am, how I dress, how rock and roll I am and how stupid I can be.”

As the founding father of the seminal – but now-defunct – record label F-Communications, Garnier helped to launch the career of Mr Oizo, who ironically is now at home amongst the Ed Banger stable of artists. “A lot of the new guys now, we wouldn’t have signed them to F-Communications, because it’s not our thing,” he continued. “Musically it doesn’t excite us at all. Some of them I like – I’m not saying it’s all crap – but a lot of it just doesn’t talk to me. I feel a lot of it is marketing more than anything else. This is why I feel dubstep is more exciting, because I feel those guys are making it for the right reasons.”

Canadian May Weekender loads of free mixes

Heading into the Canadian May Long-Weekend with a smile and my head shook up from bass and synth-pop. For those non-Canadians, the Victoria Day weekend in May is a call-back to our British monarch heritage. It is really pointless that we still celebrate our late head-of-state Victoria, The Queen of England's birthday, but it is the unofficial kick-off to the Summer season in Canada. Usually camping, beer, beaches, bon-fires, fireworks, road-trips, and similar debauchery is in store. Or working for double your wage on the holiday Monday as I will be doing.

But the iPod is loaded up and plenty has been downloaded. I now must sort and delete mediocre from shit I'll actually listen to. Spor, Apex, Alphabeat, Bat for Lashes, Sloan, the Vandals, Lagwagon, DJ Cure, and some other fine mixes already synced that never leave my iPod.

)EIB( aka Bad Company UK free Drum and Bass mix

Coming out of November of 2008, this heavy hitter is a must have for DnB enthusiasts. Amazing basslines and mixing that have been enjoying my headphones most recently. Not much written out there about this quartet of DJs. Aside from this Wikipedia page and an article on GrooveRadio, but let their beats speak for themselves. The group has been playing since 1998 and are a combination at times and solo projects more often.
I hope to post more Drum and Bass more often. So keep tuned!

Playing for Change Global street music

Playing for Change connects the distance between cultures with a virtual studio recording street musicians from all over the world. Each artist adds their personal touch with the recordings of the other artists playing in the headphones. Gradually and with plenty of travel, the Playing for Change studio captures soulful renditions of classic tunes. But the artists never meet. It is the music and technology that brings them all together. Thanks to Brendon for linking up. A little more information from Gizmodo who've written a great article. VV Brown - Shark in the Water Do Wop Indie - NEW track

Sonic contradiction and fabulous self fix-up tunes. VV Brown is a keeper in my collection and her latest track Shark in the Water flexes her inspired voice and makes an incredible tune. The only problem I have is that you're weather was too nice, take me to England!

Though in the coming months a trip is in order, the video and the track is a hitter on notes and emotions. Something many can get behind and follow. I have been impressed with all her releases and Shark in the Water just shows me her talent, her range, and her dealings. It's one thing to get a track that plays well, but it is another completely to know the story.

The transition of island rock ballad to quick finish lets me replay and replay VV's new track. Emotive, exciting, chill, thrill. . it's the tune for the time.

Perhaps a pub-show is in order for my travels? VV - we'll talk! England friends - we'll talk! but for now, enjoy the tunes and find more on one of our favourite up-starts!

Mary Jane Baker free Fidget, Electro, and Bassline mix

Total party mix from Toronto DJ Mary Jane Baker.
MJB is known well for her styles behind the decks and in rave media (she is also a talented designer).

Quality tunes and tasty tracks. MJB has an incredible flair for mixing a set proper!

In her own words,

This is my first recorded house set. WARNING to those who don't enjoy house you can GET down to; this set is HARD and DIRTY, and probably not like anything you're used to. It's very possible youre head may ex/implode. With tracks ranging from a variety of prestigious and award winning 'Nu-Aged' producers, this Nu-Rave house mix includes a selection that borders on a variety of genres such as Garage, Techno, Fidget, Trance and even Breakbeat. I wanted to share nothing but badass basslines, cheesetastic vocals and never ending delicious drops, to keep those rumps shakin.

Big thanks to Jessica for the set! Now download and enjoy!

Metric Official video for Gimme Sympathy + XTRAS

The brand new album Fantasies from Toronto's Metric encapsulates and enforces Emily Haines' views on many subjects. Vocal, synthy, and deeply down to Earth - the album hits all the right spots.

This particular track brings back the wave of excitement I first felt listening to the original debut several years ago. Pop-py, but not generic. A satisfying return of the bright Canadian band.

"Who would you rather be: The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?" Here's Jimmy's answer: "Neither. One is dead and the other is corporate!"

Listen to the entire album and get excited to catch Metric live. Drowned in Sound invited Metric to review the new album track-by-track. Check it!

Siftables - Interactive Music Cubes

Siftables are cookie-sized computers with motion sensing, neighbor detection, graphical display, and wireless communication. They act in concert to form a single interface: users physically manipulate them - piling, grouping, sorting - to interact with digital information and media. Siftables provides a new platform on which to implement tangible, visual and mobile applications.

Sounds like a tasty exploration of electronics? View how the seemingly simple cubes can be used to create dynamic sound modulation. Might be interesting to see at a Chip-Tune party or in the production studio.
